Save The Date
Emy's class consists mainly of boys ages 4-5. One of the boys is GAGA
over Transformers. He brings one in everyday for show and tell. He lets everyone know that he's got 50,000 Transformers at his house, along with a room for them all, Transformers sheets, pillows, clock, chairs, you name it, he's got it. Based on his enthusiasm alone, all the kids are convinced that Transformers must be the coolest thing this planet has to offer them.
Now I liked watching Transformers as a kid, and I have the first animated movie, but I wouldn't let any small children watch it. Any way you slice it, it's as much about war as GI Joe. I feel, therefore, that it would be wrong to throw Emy an all out Transformers birthday party next month even though it might raise her out of "you're just a girl" obscurity and elevate her to that heavenly state of "but you are still cool anyway" bliss that Hillary Clinton will never enjoy.
Hence, my dilemma.. (and yes, I do feel insanely lucky that dilemmas like these are the only dilemmas I currently have.) So, I've scrapped the pirate party idea. Scrapped poor Curious George. And I am onto Outer Space.
Transformers are after all, from another planet. But along with
Transformers, I can also include rockets, stars, moons, spaceships, planets, astronauts, space sand, moon rovers, normal robots, and all kinds of science into the mix for fun, games, and decorations. My Aunt and Uncle have unknowingly given me the means of funding the party with gift cards to a craft store. I am going to have some sort of Outer Space pinata, a moonwalk cake, and OK, OK, there may be one or two Transformers invited.
Come if you dare - tentative date is June 21st 3 PM to 5:00 PM. I am thinking on serving moon rocks (chicken nuggets), alien guts (lo mein noodles), and asteroid jam (green jello with purple grapes).

Video Games Are Cool
You can learn alot about a person watching them play Sonic Advance, Zone 4 (the Snow). In this scene a character has to race under the water, and after you're down there for about 30 seconds, the music starts to speed up, and a counter starts counting down from 5. You have to figure out all for yourself that you are running out of air and then you have to figure out how to get some. I've seen people curse, fling things, stomp, yell, scream, turn the game off, run away, gulp for air...all kinds of things. But the best thing to do is get determined and serious, focus, and have your character run as fast as possible to the nearest air bubble. It's about problem solving, people...and moms on the internet who think video games are bad for children have never seen their kid set their lips straight and get determined the way I have seen mine get. Or the euphoric glee she expresses when the air is refreshed and she can yell, "I did it!".

Big Sister Idea
Some website suggested that we get Emy a present to give to her when the baby's born to congratulate her on becoming a big sister. I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what to get, and my brain is already wracked thinking up a name, and thinking about what to do for her birthday party, and a host of other things to ponder. Anyway, I think I've got it... a puppet theater.
I will plan to build it, then give up, and buy it.
Here is the genius of the idea -- as babies can be kinda boring, the puppet show can be a way Emy can interact with a person who will have no choice but to pay attention to all of her shows. And Emy loves attention, even if it's forced. It will keep them both occupied, which is all parents ever really want to do for their kids. Or maybe that's just me. And maybe, just maybe, the baby will laugh at something Emy does, and then they will be best friends for life.
So, anyone out there got puppets? If not, can anyone out there make puppets? I think all it takes is a clean sock and some buttons, or maybe it's felt? In any case, I want to put a call out to everybody Emy knows to send her a puppet for a big sister present. She loves the two puppets she got as a baby from Tal (did I ever thank you for that?) - a Pig and a Fairy, that even though seem completely unrelated make very interesting stories together. Like the time the Pig turned into a kite and the Fairy had to chase the Pig Kite around (and around) the house because the Pig was afraid of getting lost....
I want to collect all the puppets together and put them on the puppet theater pegs (that will be part of the design!) and give them to her all at the same time in August. Let me know if you are in, or if you think I am crazy or both. Thanks.

"Taming" the Shrew
I have been avoiding the laundry this past week, because I believed we had a rat. It actually was a shrew - mean, venomous mammals, not rodents, that beat up mice and eat bugs instead of people food. So, it's dead now,for the good or the bad, but thank goodness that means I can do the laundry again.
